This paper attempts to clarify the domain of qualitative research. To this end, the paper delineates the paradigmatic underpinning of qualitative and quantitative research, explores the characteristics of the qualitative researcher and introduces some of the strategies of qualitative research. Quality in qualitative research has been the subject of considerable debate and there are differing views on the issue. This paper reviews two broad perspectives to quality in qualitative research and their respective quality criteria.
